Author and educator Treopia G. Washington discusses her memoir, In Spite Of... The book details her and her family's experiences growing up during the Jim Crow era.
Treopia G. Washington has served as the vice president of Partnerships and Minority Affairs at the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, as the presidential appointee to the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and, most recently, as the director of Special Initiatives at Bowie State University. Her memoir reflects on her life and experiences growing up in Little Rock, Arkansas, during the Jim Crow era. Those experiences include the story of her brother, Ernest Green, who became one of the first nine African American students, also known as the Little Rock Nine, allowed to attend Little Rock Central High School in 1957.
